The Night Circus is the debut novel of Erin Morgenstern and was given the Alex Award by YALSA in 2011. This stunning tale of fate intertwined with greed and love finds its home in a very unique turn of the 20th century circus – Le Cirques des Reves (The circus of dreams). It arrives with no advance warning and leaves in much the same manner. Celia is a young girl of five who comes to realize she has inherited psychokinetic powers from her previously unknown father, Hector Bowen, aka Prospero the Entertainer. Celia is quickly entered into a terrible contest through which her father pits her and his teaching methods against those of a rival magician, Marco – an epic battle of magic that, unbeknownst to the two players, will only end in the death of one of the players. Neither Hector nor his opponent could have ever imagined that Celia and Marco would fall hopelessly in love. Their respective mentors do everything in their power to come between Marco and Celia but find little success as the two sped towards an unexpected yet oddly fitting finale. The cast of supporting characters are lively and realistic and easily find their place in the tale of Marco and Celia. The story is excellent and the writing is crisp and original – Morgenstern has obviously found her groove.
I loved the elements of fantasy and "magical realism" in this book. The chapters would often change time and location, which kept me on my toes and never let me know what was coming. I truly loved this book.
